Hull Conservative Andy Forster insinuates that the Labour Government’s £156 million scheme to regenerate the Orchard Park Estate will not proceed if Labour continues in government after 2010 (Mail, 18 August).
In fact, only Labour is committed to this investment in Orchard Park.
This is not just because improvements in Orchard Park are long overdue, but because of the boost to local skills and jobs that the scheme will help provide over the next decade. As we emerge from the global recession, keeping people in work makes more sense for the country’s finances than the Tory cut and slash approach that we saw through the 1980s and early 1990s. For Tories, cuts are a matter of malicious dogma, not sound housekeeping, as we can see from their debate about dismantling our National Health Service.
Even if the Tories were not going to makes huge cuts overall, their record also shows that Hull is never a spending priority under Tory governments.
I somehow doubt that my Tory opponent in Hull North Victoria Aitken will commit to Labour’s Orchard Park housing regeneration plans, or for that matter Labour’s level of investment in local schools, children’s centres and health services.
Aside from the threat posed by a Tory government, my main concern is that the people of Orchard Park are properly consulted so that the scheme meets their needs and aspirations.
