MP backs Humberside Police modernisation

Speaking in the House of Commons today (20 December), Hull North MP Diana Johnson backed Government plans to modernise policing structures across Yorkshire.

The House of Commons has this week been debating Home Office proposals, based on advice from Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC), to merge the 43 police forces across the country into a far smaller number of merged forces. The HMIC proposals come from their report Closing the Gap, published in September.

Hull must lead in Wilberforce 2007

Hull North MP Diana Johnson has called for Hull to be the central focus of celebrations in 2007 marking William Wilberforce's achievement in outlawing Britain's role in the slave trade.

Speaking today in a debate in Parliament's Westminster Hall, Diana Johnson MP described the pivotal role played by Hull MP William Wilberforce in getting the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act through Parliament in 1807, which led to the Abolition of Slavery Act in 1833. Diana also the set out Hull's record in championing human rights, development and fair trade around the world.

MP praises Hull business for pioneering green technology

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today praised a pioneering Hull enterprise in the green energy field.

The company, Pulse, is based in Hull's Westbourne Avenue and is developing wave power technology to harness the green energy potential of the River Humber. Diana Johnson MP recently met Pulse Director Howard Nimmo to hear about their plans, which complement the objectives of the Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Bill that is going through Parliament.

Hull MP backs battle against AIDS

Attending a World AIDS Day event at Hull's Guildhall today (Friday 2 December), Hull North MP Diana Johnson gave her support to the UK's commitment to fight AIDS.

Diana Johnson MP said: "I am delighted to support campaigners in Hull working to beat AIDs and show our continuing solidarity to those in Britain and around the world suffering from the illness and all the stigma, ignorance and prejudice that has surrounded it.

Hull MP backs Carers' Rights Day

Hull North MP Diana Johnson is visiting the Hull Carers' Centre tomorrow (Friday 2 December) to support Carers' Rights Day.

Now in its sixth year, Carers' Rights Day highlights the needs of the nation's six million carers - those who look after sick, frail or disabled relatives and partners. This year is centred around older carers, with particular emphasis on carers' take up of Pension Credit.

Diana Johnson MP said: "Carers are society's unsung heroes who make an enormous supporting contribution to our economy as well as to the welfare of those they look after.
