Hull North worst hit as unemployment hits 17 year high

Today’s unemployment figures showed that the Coalition Government has driven unemployment to a 17 year high, with youth unemployment higher than ever.

Commenting on today’s official unemployment statistics, Hull North MP Diana Johnson said: “This is a day of judgement for the Government. These dire figures show 14,701 Hull job seekers chasing 930 local Job Centre Plus vacancies.

“With Hull North having 49.9 applicants for every job, the worst figure in the country, we urgently need a change of direction.

Labour fights to protect children from paedophiles

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today (Tuesday 11 October) leads Labour’s fight to keep the automatic ban on those convicted of serious offences from working with children.

The barring regime was introduced in the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 to implement the recommendations of the Bichard Inquiry into the Soham murders of 2002. It covers a wide range of people working with children or vulnerable adults and established a framework for employers and voluntary groups to use in checking the suitability of employees and volunteers.

Labour bids to protect motorists from parking rip off

Leading motoring organisations are backing Labour’s attempts to fix serious flaws in the Government’s plans on wheel-clamping that could leave motorists open to exploitation.

Coalition Government plans to ban clamping on private land will be debated in the House of Commons later today (Monday 10 October) in the ‘Protection of Freedoms Bill’. The Government wants to replace wheel-clamping with a ticketing regime for parking management.
