Hull North MP Diana Johnson has commented on today’s news that Hull has been awarded City of Culture status for 2017.


Diana Johnson MP said: “I’m delighted that the judges have awarded Hull City of Culture 2017. Hull finished first this time, against strong competition.


 
“It’s the perfect answer to the nonsense we read in The Economist recently that Hull should be abandoned.


“This news will mean much-needed investment and local jobs, especially in arts and culture, but it will also boost wider regeneration in Hull.

Labour bid to repeal Bedroom Tax voted down by Lib Dems

Diana Johnson MP today voted with Labour MPs in an attempt to abolish the unjust and unworkable Bedroom Tax, imposed by the Coalition Government.


The Hull North MP believes that households affected by this tax, including around 6,000 households in Hull, simply can’t wait until 2015 for it to be repealed.


In the Commons vote this evening most Lib Dem MPs joined their Tory Coalition partners to scupper the bid to repeal the Bedroom Tax by 252 votes to 226.

Hull MP calls for action on Equal Pay

On Equal Pay Day Hull North MP Diana Johnson called for action for equal pay between women and men.


Equal Pay Day is the day on which women effectively stop being paid for the year because of the gender pay gap.


The date for Equal Pay Day of 7 November is set by the latest pay statistics, which show that women working full-time earn 14.9% less per hour (excluding overtime) than men working full-time in the same jobs. In many professions the gender pay gap is far greater than 14.9%.
