Hull MP meets Swimming Club at pool threatened with closure

Hull North MP Diana Johnson will today (Thursday 19 September) meet Hull Swimming Club members at a Hull pool threatened with closure.

The proposal to close Ennerdale swimming pool is part of Hull City Council's response to savage funding cuts from the Coalition Government. In Parliament, all three of Hull's Labour MPs have voted against these cuts to Hull City Council.

Last week Diana Johnson MP twice raised the threat to Ennerdale Leisure Centre's swimming pool during House of Commons debates.

The Labour MP has also agreed to submit names protesting against the Ennerdale closure, collected by Hull Swimming Club members and supporters, to the House of Commons.

Hull's three Labour MPs have written jointly to the Labour Leader of Hull City Council supporting efforts protect Ennerdale swimming pool.

Hull North MP Diana Johnson said: "Hull City Council has supported Ennerdale swimming pool for 30 years. The only thing that's changed is the unfair level of funding cuts to Hull coming from this Coalition Government - cuts that could only have been forced through because of Lib Dem backing.

"Labour MPs voted against these unfair cuts to Hull and I recently set up the Fair Deal for Hull campaign against the scale of spending cuts imposed on the poorest areas, including Hull, by the Coalition Government.

"Ennerdale is the only Hull swimming pool recognised as being of competition standard, able to hold galas. This pool therefore serves the entire city of Hull in a way that no other local pool does. Ennerdale is the last Hull pool that should be closed because of Coalition cuts not the first."
