Hull North MP Diana Johnson has expressed concern about today’s announcement of 212 job losses at BAE Systems in Brough. Hull North MP Diana Johnson said: “These job cuts at BAE’s Brough site are being made even before we have seen the far greater effects of the Coalition Government budget to come in October, and the resulting cuts to our defences from the Strategic Defence and Security Review. “For example, I have been asking Ministers about the future of the Typhoon Fighter programme, which could also have an effect on the BAE site at Brough. “In our region we cannot...

Diana Johnson MP today called upon the Government to protect private tenants in Hull from dodgy and absentee landlords. The Hull North MP was responding to a report by housing charity Shelter, which demonstrated the appalling problems faced by private tenants because of rogue landlords. Diana Johnson warned that plans from the Coalition Government risked damaging the standard of private homes and the quality of life in their wider communities. Since the General Election, the Government has announced that it will sweep away key regulations introduced by Labour to protect private tenants. These include a national register of landlords set...

Hull North MP Diana Johnson is backing a Parliamentary Bill that would require schools to provide appropriate sex and relationships education - without exception. The Bill, being introduced today (Wednesday 8 September) by Rhondda MP Chris Bryant, would allow parents to withdraw their children from these classes, but only if their children agreed with that decision. However, schools would not be able to opt out of providing this education. The aim of the Bill is to reduce the number of teenage births. The UK figures for teenage pregnancies are the highest in Europe, five times higher than in the Netherlands,...

Diana Johnson MP has attacked Coalition Government plans for a new tax on householders and businesses in areas of the greatest flooding risk. Speaking in a Commons adjournment debate yesterday evening (13 July) on issues arising from the June 2007 Hull floods, the Hull North MP challenged the Government on media reports that they are planning to privatise the UK’s flood defence network, and will allow a new charge to be levied, possibly on Council Tax or water rates, from householders and businesses in areas that need to have flood defences improved. Responding for the Government, Flood Minister Richard Benyon...

Hull North MP Diana Johnson has sponsored a Parliamentary Bill that would ensure that GPs and schools identify carers and young carers. The Carers (Identification and Support) Bill would make sure that GPs would recognise where a person is a carer and take their needs into account. The Bill would also require schools and local authorities to have written policies to support young carers. It would place a duty on social services authorities to offer support to families where the adult relies on the caring role of his or her child. Diana Johnson MP said: “More than in one five...
