Tories hit 500,000 of the poorest students as student maintenance grants are axed

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today backed Labour’s last-ditch attempt to halt Tory plans to replace student maintenance grants for students from poorer backgrounds with loans from 2016.
 
Tories voted down the Labour move in the Commons to annul the measure by votes 306 votes to 292.
 
The Government’s own Equality Impact Assessment shows that the changes would affect around 500,000 of the poorest students - including disabled, older learners and women.
 

Hull MP slams Lib Dem plan to axe Student Opportunity Fund

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today pressed Ministers about reports that the Lib Dems plan to axe funding that helps students from poorer backgrounds into further education.


Speaking in Business Questions in the House of Commons today, Diana Johnson MP said: “As the Member of Parliament whose constituency contains the excellent Hull University, I am concerned to hear press reports that the Chief Secretary to the Treasury wants to scrap the £300 million student opportunities fund.
