MP backs plan for new youth services in Hull

New facilities for Hull’s young people could be built under Government plans to invest in youth services across England.

Diana Johnson MP today welcomed proposals that will pave the way for long-lasting investment in local youth facilities. The Hull North MP said if the plans were passed by Parliament, local communities could bid for funding to improve facilities for young people in the area.

MPs slam Lib Dem secrecy over KC shares sell-off

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today tabled a Parliamentary motion attacking the decision by Hull’s ruling Liberal Democrat councillors to sell the local authority’s stake in Kingston Communications (KC).

Hull MP petitions Parliament on Orchard Park Shopping Centre

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today presented a petition to Parliament from Hull North residents protesting about poor shopping facilities at Orchard Park Shopping Centre.

The petition reads:

"To the House of Commons, the Petition of the Residents of the Orchard Park Housing Estate, Kingston upon Hull, declares that the Orchard Park Shopping Centre is in need of redevelopment. The petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urge the Secretary of State for Local Government and Communities to ensure that a redevelopment or refurbishment of the Centre takes place."

Hull MP joins Humberside Police on the beat

Hull North MP Diana Johnson has joined Humberside Police on a temporary basis to get a rare view of what happens behind the scenes in the force.

Diana is joining Humberside Police for a 22 day attachment on the Police Service Parliamentary Scheme, and is the first Hull MP to join the scheme. As an MP with a strong interest in combating crime and anti-social behaviour, Diana felt that the best way to fully appreciate the challenges faced by the police was to shadow Humberside Police for an extensive period.

Vote to give Hull Monopoly status

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today urged local people to vote Hull onto the new Monopoly board.

The makers of the World-famous board game are producing a new UK version of Monopoly and are deciding what British towns and cities will feature on the board through an online public vote.

Votes for Hull can be recorded at http://www.monopoly.co.uk/vote.aspx.

With only a few days until polling closes on 25 May, 8,000 extra votes would get Hull into the top 22 and onto the Monopoly Board.

Hull North MP makes Labour leadership choice

Hull North’s Labour MP Diana Johnson today announced that she has nominated Gordon Brown and Alan Johnson to be Labour’s new leadership team.

The contest for Labour’s leadership positions was triggered by the resignation of Tony Blair and John Prescott last week.

Diana Johnson MP said: “I have nominated Gordon Brown as Leader and Alan Johnson as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.

Hull North MP salutes Labour's most successful Leader

Hull North Labour MP Diana Johnson today paid tribute to the Prime Minister Tony Blair after he announced his resignation as Leader of the Labour Party.

Diana Johnson MP said: "Whatever different views people have about the political controversies of the past decade, one fact is clear: Tony Blair is the most successful Labour Leader in the Party’s 101-year history.

Hull campaigners deliver Gholam petition to Downing Street

Diana Johnson MP today joined Hull campaigners handing in a 2,500 name petition to 10 Downing Street supporting a Hull North man’s appeal against being deported to Afghanistan.

Gholam Nazary, 22, fled his native Afghanistan in 2002 after one of his brothers was murdered by the Taliban and his family was split up. Gholam’s family are members of the Hazara tribe who have been persecuted by the Taliban.

Since seeking asylum in Britain, and arriving in Hull, Gholam has gained an education and worked with local young people at The Warren Centre on childcare and music projects.

Hull MP backs stroke prevention drive

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today backed a new campaign for blood pressure awareness by The Stroke Association and Rotary International Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI).

Diana had her blood pressure tested at Parliament’s Portcullis House to highlight how monitoring blood pressure can help to prevent a stroke.
