MP protests at Hull’s exclusion from Clegg’s ‘Golden Triangle’

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today slammed Lib Dem Leader Nick Clegg’s exclusion of Hull from his ‘Golden Triangle’ of growth between Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield.

In response to Chancellor George Osborne’s statement on having an high speed rail connection between Manchester and Leeds, the Lib Dem Deputy Prime Minister’s office this week briefed local newspapers in Sheffield that: “Nick Clegg has long believed that three cities – Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield – should become a ‘Northern golden triangle’ to drive economic growth in the North”.

In Hull, about 23,000 families—one in five of all local households—rent privately, and this figure has risen over the past decade. Across my constituency, families who rent privately regularly report concerns about the instability of short-term lets and the high charges imposed by under-regulated letting agents. I therefore fully support the motion.

Hull North MP backs tougher sentences for knife crime

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today backed a Commons move to introduce tougher sentencing for the repeated possession of a knife.

The amendment to the Criminal Justice and Courts Bill was passed by 404 votes to 53, with Lib Dem MPs opposing the crackdown.
It will mean that adults receive a minimum six month jail term on their second conviction for carrying a knife. 16-year-olds would be given at least a four-month detaining and training order.

Passport chaos: Hull MP advises early applications

Diana Johnson MP is advising her Hull North constituents to make passport applications early to allow extra time for them to be processed.

Over the past month, the Hull North MP has had an unprecedented surge of complaints from constituents struggling to get passport applications processed in time for holidays, including new passports for children.

The Passport Office has a reported backlog of 500,000 applications, following staff cuts by the Coalition Government.

Diana Johnson MP said: “In March, the Transport Secretary gave the impression to Parliament and the media that there was a fair chance that Hull rail electrification would be done in time for 2017 City of Culture, rather than waiting with other schemes not to be started until after 2019, if at all.

Local MP supports drive to reach carers in Hull

One in eight adults are carers, but the very nature of caring - of being there for a loved one facing ill health or disability - means too often people don’t identify themselves as carers and, therefore, miss out on support.

Without the right help and support, caring can have a serious impact on their physical and emotional health, work and finances.

Hull North MP Diana Johnson visited Hull Northern Cemetery in her Constituency today (6 June) to see the local work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).

The CWGC maintains war cemeteries and memorials at 23,000 locations in 153 countries.

Hull Northern Cemetery in Chanterlands Avenue contains 279 Second World War graves and 69 scattered First World War burials.
