20% increase in Hull Food Bank use this Christmas

Hull North MP Diana Johnson has encouraged those who can afford it to make a pre-Christmas donation to Hull’s Food Banks to help local families in need.

The Labour MP’s call comes as Hull Food Bank is expecting more than a 20% increase in the number of local people needing assistance from them in the month of Christmas this year, compared to December 2013.

Hull North MP Diana Johnson has commented on today's local government settlement for Hull.

Diana Johnson said: "On top of the unfair cut of 25% of Hull City Council's budget between 2010 and 2015, this Coalition Government is imposing on Hull a further punitive cut of £24m in 2015/16. That's a further loss of £126 per Hull household - or 5.7% of Hull's Council budget - on top of losing £628 per household already since 2010.

Hull North Labour MP Diana Johnson voted in the Commons today (16 December) to introduce pay transparency across large companies.

The measure, put forward by Labour, will require companies employing over 250 staff to publish their own gender pay gap in their annual report.

Hull MP tells Commons about Constituent’s seven month benefit wait

Hull North MP Diana Johnson today told MPs about the hardship suffered by a constituent who waited seven months for his Personal Independence Payment (PIP) application to be processed.

Officially, PIP applications are meant to be processed in a maximum of 74 days.

Diana Johnson MP told the Commons: “My constituent Simon Brown waited seven months for his PIP application to be processed. This delay meant he was also unable to apply for other help – such as the additional Housing Benefit that a PIP award allows.

Diana backs launch of 'Treasured Steps' to help young readers

Diana was at St Nicholas Primary School for the launch of the 'Treasured Steps' reading game produced by Hull Community Church.

The game helps teach primary school children how to read and will be especially valuable in closing the gender gap on reading skills.

Diana attended the launch with University Ward Labour councillors.

Hull excluded from ‘Northern Powerhouse’

Hull North MP Diana Johnson has responded to today’s Autumn Statement from the Chancellor.

Hull North MP Diana Johnson said: “Hull is clearly outside this Government’s ‘Golden Triangle’ and barely gets a mention in this Autumn Statement and all the talk about a ‘Northern Powerhouse’.

“This Statement had nothing to support Hull’s work as the national City of Culture 2017, but finds £78m for a new Theatre and exhibition complex in Manchester.

Hull North MP Diana Johnson has reacted to news of the £80m allocated by the Government to flood defence works around the Humber.

Hull North MP Diana Johnson said: “This is not new money, but it tells us what the Humber’s share is of funding announced previously by Ministers. Overall flood defence investment has actually been cut since 2010.

“This £80m over six years for the Humber should be set against the £888m minimum identified by the Environment Agency as what’s needed for flood protection works around the Humber over the next ten years.
