Corona virus update

Statement from Diana Johnson MP (as of 17th March 2020)
I know many of you are concerned about the ongoing global COVID 19 (coronavirus) outbreak.
I sympathise profoundly with the families of those who have lost loved ones, as well as all other individuals who have tested positive for coronavirus. I also pay a huge tribute to all frontline staff in NHS and social care settings and the officials at NHS England and Public Health England who continue to respond to the outbreak.
In Hull, I am monitoring the situation very closely. I am in contact with the Director of Public Health, the Chief Executives of Hull City Council and Hull & East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust as well as Hull Clinical Commissioning Group.
I am continuing to share the specific concerns of Hull North constituents with the Government, and in Parliament. Issues that I have so far raised include: additional financial support for people unable to work including access to Statutory Sick Pay, more resources for the NHS and the need for a national childcare strategy if schools close, so key workers can carry on working. I have also been trying to assist constituents who are stranded abroad.
Following the Prime Minister's press conference and the Health Secretary's statement  on 16th March 2020, the following is the Government's official guidance, but this is very fast moving so please check regularly for updates by visiting:

Today (17th March 2020), the Foreign Secretary advised against all but essential travel outside the UK for the next month. For regularly updated travel advice, visit:
Emergency legislation
The Government is bringing forward emergency legislation to respond to the pandemic. Measures include extending Statutory Sick Pay and adjusting Employment Support Allowance and Universal Credit rules to ensure people are entitled to money from day one of self-isolation. I support the Government's intention to bring forward emergency legislation, but will of course scrutinise any proposals extending Government powers to ensure they are proportionate and time-limited.
Volunteering in Hull North
It is important that there is a properly co-ordinated response for those who wish to help out in Hull at this difficult time, and I have already raised this with Hull City Council and the North Bank Forum. We will post further information on how to volunteer in Hull as we receive it over the next few days.
Arrangements for my office
I continue to represent Hull North constituents at Westminster. My constituency office in Hull is now closed to visitors, but our telephone lines and e-mail remain open. I am continuing to assist constituents with telephone surgeries, in place of face-to-face surgery meetings. In line with medical advice the majority of my staff are now working from home.
If you have any queries or problems that I can assist with, please contact me on 01482 319135 or e-mail  I will get back to you as soon as possible.
