Hull North MP and Schools Minister Diana Johnson today welcomed this year's GCSE results showing a rise in the number of young people across Hull getting good grades.

Today's GCSE results for Hull show:

A 12.9 percentage points rise, to 64.1%, in the number of pupils getting five or more GCSEs at A*-C grade since 2008. This is a big increase of 41.3 percentage points from just 22.8% in 1998.

A 6.9 percentage points rise, to 36.5%, in the number of pupils getting five or more GCSEs at A*-C grade, including in the vital subjects of English and maths, since 2008. This is an increase of 19.7 percentage points from just 16.8% in 1998.

Diana Johnson MP said: "Congratulations to young people, teachers and parents across Hull on the progress shown in this year's GCSE results.

"This year's GCSE results show a good increase over the last year and an even more marked improvement in school standards across Hull since 1997. Since 1998, Hull has shown one of the highest rates of improvement in the country for children getting five good GCSE results.

"This progress is the result of much hard work, and it could not have been done without the investment and support from the Labour Government since 1997.

"To see the further progress that is still needed in Hull, especially in those getting good results in English and maths, we must keep up the investment in higher standards. Unlike the Tories who want cut funding to schools, and the Lib Dems who demand 'savage cuts', Labour will continue to increase investment in schools each year.

"I want every Hull child, and not just a few, to get a good education with extra help for those who need it most. I want every young person to have a choice of good qualifications, whether their strengths are practical, academic or both.

"Labour's school leaver guarantee means that every 16 and 17 year old who got their GCSE results in the summer can now stay on in education or training. With extra funding announced in the Budget we're guaranteeing a suitable place in school, college, training or an apprenticeship for all young people - a pledge the Conservatives have repeatedly refused to match."
